1) Food

What you eat in the hours running up to your bedtime can be a big factor in whether you drift off to sleep straight away or whether or not you are left sitting in bed wide awake for hours at a time. 

The rough rule for food is that saturated fats are typically bad, with simple carbs ( think sugar ).  Saturated fats take a lot of resources to process and cause your digestive system to be functioning all night, keeping you in a light sleep or awake, and simple sugars in your blood give you a lot of energy which is definitely bad when you are attempting to sleep. 

Good foods that help with sleep are tomatoes, eggs, bananas and hot milk.  Try and keep your plate sizes nominal as a giant meal before bedtime takes plenty of energy to digest and will disrupt your sleep. 

2) Meditation

A 10-15 minute meditation session just before your bedtime can do absolute wonders if you cannot drop off at night.  Meditation will permit your body and spirit to relax and release all of the strain you have built up throughout the day, permitting you to chill more as you lay down to sleep, and you will naturally drift off. 

Try and get a quiet, dark or dim room where you won’t be troubled.  Playing some relaxing music can also help a lot.  Close your peepers take deep breaths and slow down your breathing.  Target the air as it moves out and in of your lungs, target how your arms and legs feel, how your body feels, clear your head off any other thoughts and just focus on the current moment.
